讲座概要:
Recent development research relates civil conflict risk to exogenous income shocks. Income decline in small open economies relates to the recent global financial crisis that began in the U.S. Can a financial crisis with origins in a major industrial country increase conflict risk in small open economies through a decline in income? Using direct measures of financial crisis, and controlling for country-specific effects on the incidence of conflict, I find negative income effects from exogenous financial crises and their associated income redistribution that relate to increased civil conflict risk. Furthermore, I find some evidence of increased conflict risk in ethnically-fractionalized, capitalist economies that redistribute income during a financial crisis.
