讲座主题：GDP Competition and Earnings Management: Evidence from China

摘要：This paper examines whether incentives created by the focus of regional macroeconomic performance can affect the extent of micro accrual-based and real earnings management activities. We study two kinds of Chinese GDP competition in which the listed firms withstand strong pressure from local governments to manage earnings in order to meet the economic development objectives. We find that the nationwide GDP competition has significant impact on real earnings management and adjacent-wide GDP competition has significant impact on accrual-based earnings management practices, but only for SOEs. Real earnings management dominates the choice of earnings management under the combination of the two kinds of competitions which indicates that the real earnings management is the first choice until the real activities cannot help to meet the GDP objectives. Further, we find that the probability of promotion is lower for those provincial leaders driving firms to take accrual-based earnings management to promote economic growth than real earnings management. We also take different GDP competition measures into consideration which provides similar results. Our empirical findings strongly suggest that the GDP competition accounts for a significant portion of earnings management in China’s listed firms.

讲座人简介：郝颖，北京师范大学经济与工商管理学院，教授，博士生导师。清华大学经济管理学院博士后，美国哥伦比亚大学商学院访问学者。国家自然科学基金通讯专家，教育部博士点基金评审专家，全国会计领军人才（学术类），人力资源和社会保障部干部教育培训专家，中国会计学会对外学术交流委员会委员，多本国际高水平期刊与国内权威期刊的审稿人。主要研究领域为：公司财务与资本市场会计。作为项目负责人，承担了国家自然科学基金2项，教育部人文社科基金1项、中国博士后特别资助项目1项、中国博士后基金1项和重庆市重大决策咨询项目1项。近年来分别在《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《管理科学学报》、《Financial Management》、《Pacific Basin Finance Journal》、《International Review of Finance 》、《International Review of Economics and Finance 》、《南开管理评论》、《金融研究》、《中国管理科学》、《经济科学》、《财经研究》等国内高水平杂志上发表论文三十几篇，已独立出版专著两部。分别于2009年、2011年和2013年获重庆市社会科学优秀成果一等奖、二等奖和三等奖。
